Why is my Internet connection so slow?

Internet speeds are controlled by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), not the modem. There are no settings inside any of the Actiontec modems or gateways that can affect the speeds coming from your ISP or going out to your devices. We recommend that you take the following steps to make sure your modem or gateway is receiving the correct speeds from your ISP.

  1. Once the modem authenticates onto the DSL network the ISP controls the speed at which the modem is allowed to connect based on the account type. You can verify the connection speed by opening your browser and typing in or
    1. Like a firewall or antivirus program set with really high-security settings.
    2. Is your device connected directly to the modem or gateway? Or is it connected to a secondary router? 
    3. Do all computers or devices have the speed issue? If no the issue maybe with that on computer/device
    1. Once in the modem interface go to the status page of your device
    2. Scroll down to DSL status section.
    3. Look for the entry for Speed down/up this will tell you what speed your ISP has allowed the modem to connect with.
    4. If the speed is the correct speed for the account then any browsing speed issues this may indicate that there is a problem with your computers/devices themselves. At that point please check the following:
    5. If the speed is not correct please have your ISP come out to your house and make sure there is no issue with the DSL line coming all the way into your house that connects to your modem.

    1. To get the most accurate test results:
      1. Close all applications, including streaming video and music.
      2. Connect your computer directly to your modem.
      3. Remove hubs, switches or routers between the computer and the modem.
      4. Power down "ALL" other devices.
      5. Mobile devices that don't have flash won't be able to run this speed test. Android and iOS users can use the OOKLA's Speed app*.
